My wife has some had issues and was really struggling to open cans with a traditional hand opener. I looked up reviews and and this one got mostly good. One concern (I think) was about the short power cord -- I thought so to UNTIL I REALIZED the cord is HIDDEN inside the case -- just PULL it out however far you need it. Doh! Sure it's in the manual but who reads those eh? Anyway, my wife LOVES this thing and it works perfectly every time. A+++

Hamilton Beach 76607 Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome, by Hamilton Beach. To start off with, the Amazon picture is a bit different than the actual item I received. On the Hamilton Beach web site, the Model 86606Z has a black handle, and the Model 76607 has a black handle with a silver colored center section. The Model 76607 with scissors that I received, had a black handle, but one of the pictures on the box showed the black and silver handle. The bottom of the opener was stamped Model 76607 Series B 0461 EG. I guess the black handled one I received was an older color scheme. Of course, none of this affects the operation of the can opener, but it does make you wonder if you received the correct one. This opener, with scissors, weighs 3 1/8 pounds, measures 10 3/16"H x 4 5/8"W x 5"D, with the electrical specifications: Type CA33 120V 60Hz 1.5A 820238601. The operation of this opener was excellent. You place the can under the metal ring, and then press and hold down the top handle, while the opener grips the can and then spins the can around while it opens it. When the opener reaches the starting point, the can lid continues to spin, while the can stays still. Then, you lift the opener handle to release the can. This is a vast improvement over the manually operated smooth touch openers on the market, which continue to spin the can after reaching the starting point, and leave a jagged sliver of metal on the side of the can, just beyond the starting point. Same model manual smooth touch can openers, also vary quite a bit in the amount of effort required to turn the handle. The Model 76607 operator guide directions state that over- rotation might produce a metal sliver on the side of the can, but I have not seen it happen, as the can stops rotating as soon as it reaches its starting point. With this plug-in electric Model 76607, the can opener does all the work of turning and opening the can. Five Amazon stars and then some, for this Hamilton Beach Model 76607 Smooth Touch can opener with scissors, one of the few electric small kitchen gadgets on the market that actually does an excellent job of doing the job it was designed to do. I will update this review if I encounter any long-term problems while using this opener. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. The cord is ~26in long, and can be stored inside the unit itself. Reviewers who said it has a short cord probably did not pull it all the way out. I thought the same based on the reviews I read when I received the opener. But upon reading the manual, it shows a picture of storing the cord on page 5. Then I realized that the cord was not pulled out all the way. Fairly easy to use, and makes a clean cut.

Updated 3/25/2019 - this was purchased for our mother who has pretty bad arthritis. when her old electric opener died went with this totally different style. at first she was hesitant about using it. but now after a year and a half she has stated on several occasions just how much it helps her on a near daily basis. it has worked this entire time without a so much as a glitch. at some point this will wear out, all appliances do but when that time does come it will be replaced with the same model or one as close to it in design as we can find. this is the first side cut opener i have ever used and i was, am impressed! the opener arrives completely assembled. just pull the cord out of the bottom to the length you need, plug in and go. at first having used old style openers i wasn't sure how to use it. i went to the instructions which are short and concise. the first thing to know is you have no parts to remove and clean. second use with the handle in the up position, not locked down. you hold the can up to the bar and press down on the handle. as soon as it starts you can let go of the can. after one turn/rotation you can hear the sound tone change and know you're done. best of all there are no sharp edges anywhere. this unit basically cleaves the bonded metal apart more akin to popping a lid off than cutting one off. this is IMHO well worth a few extra bucks over the old style openers.

This thing is NEAT! I rarely put much thought in the purchase of a can opener, but when my old one died, I needed a replacement. Although the price of this opener is higher than a standard can opener, the "Smooth Touch" intrigued me. I was not disappointed! First, let me say that using this can opener is a no brainer, and it's extremely easy to use. I always fought with my old can opener to actually "hold" the can properly so it could cut the lid, and more often than not, the lid would still be partially attached, forcing me to fish around the sharp edges to pull it up. With this can opener, you lift the handle, place the can underneath, and then lower the handle. It grabs the can so easily, it made me realize how much of a hassle my old opener really was (sometimes it's the little things you don't notice). The can locks in securely, so no worrying about it dropping off once the opener completes its rotation. This can opener leaves the lid's edges completely smooth, as well as the rim inside the can. The lid will fit flush with the can after opening, so with things like cat food, I simply replace the lid and store it in the fridge (I wouldn't recommend this for long term storage). The build quality seems pretty good. It has decent weight, so it won't slide around, and nothing feels cheap about this appliance. My final thought: This can opener is especially great for children or the elderly, where ease of use and avoiding cuts from a can is a concern.

I'm 72 years young and this is the BEST can opener i've ever owned or operated.!! I highly recommend it.

I read a lot of the reviews before I purchased this can opener. It seems that several people just did not bother to read the instructions or they just should not be purchasing something that is powered. Many reviews state that this can opener makes metal slivers. Will if you don't use it properly then yes it will. The slivers come from not stopping the can opener after one full revolution. This is in the instructions. I also saw a customer complain about the cord being very short. Well the cord is pushed into the base of the can opener and does pull out and in my opinion is quite long enough. I have arthritis and this can opener has made my life much easier. I make Chili and need to open 8 cans of diced tomatoes and assorted beans. It's unfortunate that this can opener has gotten the bad reviews from so many people that just don't have a clue as to how to use this great can opener.

I gave this 5 stars because it is a great can opener. But let me say, I mistakenly bought the model that comes with scissors. I had the mistaken belief that this can opener had a scissors sharpener on the back. My Mom actually owned an electric can opener like that years ago. On the back of the unit it had a sharpener for knives and scissors. So as soon as I spotted the word 'scissors,' I assumed that it meant this unit also had a sharpener for scissors. What arrived was a pair of scissors in the back. They are the cheesiest, nastiest pair of scissors that won't last cutting construction paper. That's how cheap they are. But the difference between the models was $4.99 so it's not worth returning it. It doesn't affect the operation of the can opener function so I'm fine with that. I'll add photos later. You've got to see these scissors. I really like how this model operates. It's not the standard can opener. It cuts on the side and it can also cut open cans with the pull tops if you have trouble with those. Sometimes pull tops need a strong man to get them open so I can see where this will come in handy. I like how it looks on the counter. It works great and it doesn't get better than that.

I got this to replace a Proctor Silex can opener that only lasted 2 years. I was looking for a can opener that had great reviews and of similar price. This was only 3 dollars more than the Proctor Silex and it matches our kitchen appliances as well. This can opener is awesome. It has a different cut where it cuts under the top rim...AND it leaves NO SHARP EDGES or mess to clean up! My wife is impressed and asked me why we didn't buy this before. Now, having only just gotten it, I can't speak for its durability yet. But the way it cuts and less clean up alone, will probably be reason enough for me to buy another one if this item breaks. Pros: Inexpensive Cuts great leaving NO SHARP EDGES Doesn't cause a mess that needs to be cleaned Attracting color and finish Cons: None at this time.
