This Melissa & Doug color puzzle is beautiful. The knobs on the puzzle pieces are just the right size for little fingers to easily grip without any frustration. I love the fact that the colors are written on the fish to enhance the amount of teaching that can be had with this puzzle. This puzzle was used by my child speech therapist as a way to engage my child in speech and learning of colors and it came highly recommended so I bought one for at home use as well. For fun, directed learning about colors I would highly recommend this puzzle to any family of toddlers.
We got this for when our two year old grandson and one and a half year old great grandson visit us. The boys already loved chunky puzzles, and the little knobs on this one were the next step in developing their fine coordination. They are also starting to learn colors. The great thing about this puzzle is that there is no "wrong" way to put it together since all the pieces are the same shape. Sometimes the boys make multicolored fish, but they are starting to get the concept of matching colors. Our grandson was really excited to see a picture of the puzzle on my computer today as I was getting ready to write this review. His response was "FISH!!!! I like fish!" And then he ran off to find it in the toy box and play with it. By the way, he says he thinks other kids will like it, too.
My daughter learned her colors with the aid of this puzzle (by 20 months of age). She was not as interested in actually putting the pieces in the slots; she'd rather carry them around or put them on other surfaces or into other containers. It's good quality and has held up to her carrying the pieces all over the house.
My son started to really love puzzles, but we only had a couple of animal puzzles and a number one, both of which were helping him learn pretty quickly, so I decided to buy him a couple more puzzles for his birthday so we could work on more vocabulary and recognition, like colors. I bought him this for his second birthday, and he mastered it in about 10 minutes. Haha. He calls it his "fish butt puzzle." It has certainly helped him learn his colors -- he knows the colors of all of the fish and can match them up very easily, though he always calls the red fish, orange. To be fair, it is a very orangey red and is not at all a true, bright red color. That's my only complaint is the shade of red used on that one fish. Everything else about the puzzle is great!
My daughter has had this for a couple of months and still loves playing with it. She learned all her colors with this and likes mixing up the colors on the board and then Putting them back on. Sturdy and yet light weight.
This puzzle is so, so, cute! But of course it is very well made & teaches color's to children. I bought these for my 2 year old Grandson & he loved the color's of the puzzle because that kept his attention!! This can be bought for a younger child also. Jewell,,,, TX
Love Melissa & Doug toys -- fun and educational. Purchased this as activity for my 96 yr old mom w Alzheimer's who is also bed bound. She can do 1-2-3's and shapes, so hopefully Fish Colors will be another stimulating activity to keep hands and mind working.
The 20-month old granddaughter loves to match the puzzle pieces and it didn't take long for her to learn how to turn the fish tails to fit in the space. A great way to learn colors. The wood puzzle will last a long time and the little "buttons" on the pieces make them easy to grasp to put in place.
I get this puzzle for all of my friends with little ones. It is a great way to learn colors. Most items show a color with something, then another color with a new object. That makes it difficult for the child to learn the color, because a lot has changed between the items. Here they are the same - all whimsical fish. The only difference is the color. This makes learning colors so easy. My child had them down by about 18 months with this puzzle and I 100% recommend it to any parent. It's a fun and easy puzzle but also a great learning tool.
I bought this puzzle 8 years ago, with my oldest. He loved this puzzle, and got really good at matching the pieces to their color. With my second son, I remembered my oldest sons love for this puzzle and bought it again. Now my youngest enjoys playing with it, and has learned to match the colors. He is 16 months old, so he gets frustrated at fitting the pieces in, but sometimes he gets lucky. I have the puzzle in a shelf, and my son will ask for it, so I am really happy I bought it again.
